Astros provide Yordan Alvarez injury update originally appeared on The Sporting News
The Houston Astros placed designated hitter Yordan Alvarez on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a left ankle sprain.
The soonest Alvarez was would able to return is Sept. 26, against the Los Angeles Angels in the Astros' final regular season series.
However, Alvarez told reporters on Sunday afternoon he would not be traveling with the team for the start of their final road trip to Sacramento.
Alvarez Injury Update
The Astros placed Alvarez on the 10-day IL on Friday, that is retroactive to Sept, 16, after he sprained his ankle on Sept. 15 against the Texas Rangers.
Alvarez has already missed a large portion of the season due to a hand injury, and now his availability for the postseason is in doubt.
On Sunday afternoon, Alvarez, through an interpreter, told reporters he is progressing better than the initial prognosis, but hasn't started any baseball activities yet. Alvarez is waiting for the swelling of his ankle to go down, and the Astros' slugger will not travel with the team to Sacramento for the start of their final road trip, according to The Athletic's Chandler Rome.

This isn't great news for the Astros, but it's better than the initial reaction to Alvarez's injury. The night the Astros' star sprained his ankle, he left the clubhouse in a boot.
Alvarez is out of the boot now, but the team is still waiting on his swelling to dissipate before he starts any activities in the recovery process.
The Astros are fighting for their playoff lives in the final seven games of the regular season, and now they'll begin to do so without their star slugger.
If Houston makes it into the playoffs, all eyes will be on when Alvarez can return to the Astros' lineup.
