Follow along with Week 3 updates here!
The Philadelphia Eagles are 3-0 after beating the Los Angeles Rams at Lincoln Financial Field! Final score: 33 to 26.
THAT WAS INSANE.
Down 19 points to the Rams early in the third quarter, it felt like the Eagles were going to get blown out at home to drop to 2-1.
The inexplicably feeble passing offense that plagued the Eagles in their first two wins was especially bad in this game.
Things felt hopeless.
But then the Eagles apparently remembered they had A.J. Brown and the offense came to life to ultimately score 20 unanswered points. It also helped that they replaced Matt Pryor, who mightily struggled while filling in for an injured Lane Johnson, with Fred Johnson.
A missed two-point conversion late in the fourth quarter after an Eagles impressive touchdown drive had the Rams in position to win the game on a field goal.
But the Eagles blocked their second kick of the game and Jordan Davis returned it 61 yards to seal the win (AND cover the 3.5-point spread!).
Remarkable, dramatic win for a team that simply never loses.
And even if they hadn’t won this game, there would’ve been reason to feel good about the offense finally coming alive. We’ll see if they can keep it up next week on the road against a Tampa Bay Buccaneers team that has been this Eagles’ team kryptonite.
For now, though, plenty of reason to feel excited about an Eagles team that’s starting 3-0 with a valuable head-to-head tiebreaker over the Rams now in their pocket.
Read on for a recap and stay tuned for BGN’s postgame coverage.
FIRST QUARTER
- The Eagles won the coin toss and elected to defer to put the Rams on offense first. The Rams took over at their own 23-yard line. Adoree’ Jackson missed an open field tackle (shocker) on Kyren Williams to allow a first down reception. Zack Baun stepped in front of a Matthew Stafford throw for an interception! That guy is so friggin good at football. Stafford was pressured by a blitzing rookie Jihaad Campbell, who got held.
- The Eagles took over at the plus 38-yard line. Saquon Barkley ran for one yard. Jalen Hurts completed a pass to DeVonta Smith for five yards. Facing 3rd-and-4, Hurts took off running up the middle and slipped short of the marker. Facing 4th-and-2, Nick Sirianni correctly kept the offense on the field … and Hurts ran on his first designed run of the season (!) for a first down. Jared Verse had the Eagles’ QB dead to rights but got tricked by the fake handoff. Facing 3rd-and-11, Hurts hit DeVonta Smith on a slant just short of the marker. Tush Push time … no flag (despite the NFL’s increased emphasis on the play) … just a first down. Hurts threw to A.J. Brown in the end zone and the wide receiver drew a pass interference penalty to give the Birds 1st-and-goal at the 1-yard line. Tush Push No. 2 was good for the Eagles’ first touchdown! The TP haters will just have to keep on hating. EAGLES 7, RAMS 0.
- The Rams took over at their own 30-yard line. LA ran three straight times to move past midfield. Jalyx Hunt pressured Stafford into a completion by hitting the QB right as he turned around from a play fake. Facing 3rd-and-6, Baun had good coverage on a throw over the middle that was dropped. The Rams opted for a 51-yard field goal made by Joshua Karty. EAGLES 7, RAMS 3.
- The Eagles took over at their own 20-yard line after the Rams’ kickoff bounced in the landing zone and went out of the back of the end zone. Matt Pryor was in the game for Lane Johnson at right tackle and immediately gave up a pressure and a sack. Facing 3rd-and-18, the Eagles went with a coward’s draw because they love the coaching staff loves that play wayyyyyy too much.
- The Rams took over at their own 46-yard line after the Eagles allowed a 20-yard punt return. Stafford unleashed a deep throw to Davante Adams with Reed Blankenship trailing for a 44-yard touchdown. No call for offensive pass interference on a push off. EAGLES 7, RAMS 10.
- Tank “Devin Hester” Bigsby’s first kick return with the Eagles went for 16 yards to put the Eagles at their own 19-yard line. Hurts’ throw to A.J. Brown over the middle was forced incomplete with a big hit by the Rams. Barkley ran for two yards. Facing 3rd-and-8, Hurts was sacked (looked like Barkley failed to pick up the Rams’ blitz) for the Eagles’ second straight three-and-out to end the first quarter. Six plays for -13 yards in total. -2 net passing yards for the Eagles’ offense on three drives.
SECOND QUARTER
- The Rams took over at their own 34-yard line after Sydney Brown’s unnecessary roughness penalty offset a Rams holding penalty. Facing 3rd-and-7, Stafford’s downfield pass went incomplete but Quinyon Mitchell was flagged for pass interference. Questionable call. The Rams pounded the rock to move into the red zone. And then into goal-to-go. Facing 3rd-and-goal from the 2-yard line, the Rams got into the end zone for a touchdown … that was called back due to holding. Facing 3rd-and-goal from the 12-yard line, Stafford’s pass into the end zone was high and knocked away by Cooper DeJean. The Rams settled for a short field goal. Bad run defense on a bend but don’t break drive that kept it one possession game. EAGLES 7, RAMS 13.
- The Eagles took over at their own 9-yard line after both Grant Calcaterra and Jeremiah Trotter Jr. were penalized on the Rams’ kickoff. Barkley ran for two yards and then caught a checkdown for one yard. Facing 3rd-and-7, Hurts’ downfield throw to Dotson was knocked down. Ball seemed to get out a little too late.
- The Rams took over at their own 46-yard line and drove into the red zone. Facing 3rd-and-3, Stafford’s third down pass sailed wide. Sean McVay really should’ve kept his offense on the field but he settled for a field goal to make it a two-possession game. The Eagles were lucky to only be down nine since they were outgained 192 to 27 yards. EAGLES 7, RAMS 16.
- The Eagles took over at their own 14-yard line after Tank “Devin Hester” Bigsby bobbled and dropped the Rams’ kickoff. The Eagles ran a screen for Barkley that lost a yard. And then A.J. Brown was also called for unnecessary roughness. Facing 3rd-and-15, you knew what was coming … a coward’s draw! Because why try to actually get the first down? That play drew loud boos from The Linc crowd and understandably so.
- The Rams took over at the plus 48-yard line. They gained 20 yards and kicked a 46-yard field goal to take a two-touchdown lead. Fortunate Stafford had another third down miss. EAGLES 7, RAMS 19.
- The Eagles took a knee to end what was a very pathetic first half by the offense.
THIRD QUARTER
- Yet another botched Eagles kickoff return (lol) forced the Birds to start deep in their own territory at the 10-yard line. Hurts got strip-sacked by Eagles enemy Jared Verse for a Rams recovery.
- The Rams took over and Stafford hit Williams for a touchdown. The rout seemed to be on. EAGLES 7, RAMS 26.
- Laughably, John Metchie bobbled another Rams kickoff and the Eagles took over at their own 21-yard line. Fred Johnson came in to replace Matt Pryor at right tackle. Hurts completed an 8-yard pass to Brown that drew very loud sarcastic cheers at The Linc. Not too long after, Hurts hit Brown downfield for a 38-yard gain! Wow, is that legal? One play later, Hurts hit Goedert up the seam for a touchdown! An actual passing offense?! Is that allowed?!!? EAGLES 14, RAMS 26.
- The Rams took over at their own 31-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-2, Stafford took off for the first down but big man Jordan Davis was able to get him out of bounds for no gain! Which is officially logged a sack. Big stop by the defense to give the offense a chance to stay hot.
- The Eagles took over at their own 13-yard line. Hurts’ second down pass to Brown was broken up at the catch point. Facing 3rd-and-10 and being 0/6 on third down, Hurts had plenty of time to throw and found an open DeVonta Smith for a first down! Novel concept. The Eagles benefited from a “what was he supposed to do?” unnecessary roughness penalty on Kamren Kinchens. Barkley picked up nine yards running right behind big Fred Johnson. Barkley ripped off another run for a first down into the red zone. Facing 3rd-and-4, Hurts hit DeVonta short of the marker. Facing 4th-and-1, the Eagles went Tush Push No. 3 for a first down in goal-to-go. Hurts hit Brown, who pushed off but didn’t get called for it, on a back shoulder completion in the end zone for the receiver’s first touchdown since Super Bowl LIX! Very strong 13-play, 87-yard TD drive to cut the Rams’ lead to five. EAGLES 21, RAMS 26.
- The Rams took over at their own 30-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-7, Stafford was hit as he threw but completed the pass to Nacua anyway. The refs ruled it incomplete but McVay challenged to overturn the incompletion for a Rams first down. Stafford completed a pass for 19 yards that got knocked back 15 yards after the play for a pretty weak “taunting” penalty on Puka Nacua.
FOURTH QUARTER
- Facing 3rd-and-1, Stafford missed what could’ve been a touchdown throw to Davante Adams with Quinyon Mitchell trailing. Phew. Facing 4th-and-1, Jordan Davis and Jalen Carter were in on stuffing the Rams’ running attempt for a turnover on downs! Big-time stop.
- The Eagles took over at their own 47-yard line. Facing 3rd-and-4, Hurts was sacked and there was a holding penalty anyway. Facing 4th-and-6, Nick Sirianni kept the offense on the field … but not just to try to draw the Rams offside. The ball was snapped and Hurts scrambled away from pressure and nearly threw a pick that wasn’t caught for a turnover on downs. Welp. Missed opportunity to take the lead or at least cut it to a field goal game.
- The Rams took over at midfield. Facing 3rd-and-2 after driving into the red zone, Stafford’s pass to Adams was knocked down by a trailing Blankenship. The Rams brought Karty in for the field goal attempt … and it was BLOCKED! By Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis! Carter then got flagged for taunting after the play. Be smarter, Carter.
- The Eagles took over at their own 9-yard line with 8:42 left in the game. Facing 3rd-and-10 after contested catches dropped by Goedert and DeVonta, Hurts hit Brown … who stiff-armed his defender to the ground and got enough for the first down! What a beast. Facing 3rd-and-4, Hurts hit DeVonta (throw was a little high but worked out!) for another first down. The Eagles apparently figured out that it’s good to throw to your very good wide receivers. Facing 3rd-and-10, the Eagles burned their first timeout as Sirianni looked pissed on the sideline. Facing 3rd-and-10 for real, Hurts hit Brown … who broke another tackle … for another big first down! Unstoppable. Just throw to him every play. Facing 3rd-and-3 after two Hurts runs, Barkley ran for a first down. Facing 1st-and-goal at the 4-yard line, Barkley was tackled for a 4-yard loss. The Eagles let the clock run down to the two-minute warning. Hurts to Barkley for a toe-tapping catch along the sideline gained the four yards back and stopped the clock. Facing 3rd-and-goal, Hurts targeted Brown who was contacted early but the WR didn’t exactly sell it and no flag was thrown. Facing 4th-and-goal, Hurts hit DeVonta on the out route for a TOUCHDOWN. The Eagles obviously had to go for the two-point conversion since kicking an extra point would’ve accomplished nothing … but Hurts’ throw to DeVonta was knocked down. Very impressive and clutch 17-play, 91-yard touchdown drive by Hurts, Brown, DeVonta, and the Eagles’ offense. EAGLES 27, RAMS 26.
- The Rams took over at their own 30-yard line with 1:43 to play and one timeout to work with. The Rams moved past midfield and then into long field goal range with Jakorian Bennett three times in a row. For some reason, Sirianni called a timeout that allowed the Rams to save their final one. The Rams run the ball to set up a game-winning field goal attempt. Sirianni called the Eagles’ final timeout to try to ice Karty. Karty’s field goal attempt from 44 yards out was … BLOCKED! AND RETURNED TO THE END ZONE BY JORDAN DAVIS FOR AN EAGLES WIN! EAGLES 33, RAMS 26.
FINAL SCORE: EAGLES WIN, 33 to 26
