When will Jaxson Dart start?
It took less than one half for the MetLife Stadium crowd to turn on fading veteran quarterback Russell Wilson.
Late in the first half of Sunday night’s Giants home opener against the Chiefs — a must-win game for both 0-2 teams — fans began calling for first-round rookie Jaxson Dart to replace Wilson.
“We want Dart!” the crowd chanted for a few moments, with the game tied 6-6 just before halftime.
That chant came in response to Wilson’s second interception of the night, on the Giants’ fifth drive. He threw a deep-ball pick into the end zone, on a second-and-7 pass intended for Malik Nabers, from the Chiefs’ 23-yard line with 56 seconds remaining.
The Giants entered halftime down 9-6, as the Chiefs got three field goals and the Giants managed one touchdown.
Wilson and Co. gained 114 yards in the first half — 11 fewer than Kansas City. Wilson before halftime completed 7 of 13 passes for 39 yards, those two picks and a 19.9 quarterback rating.
The Giants signed Wilson to a one-year contract this past offseason and then traded up to draft Dart in Round 1. So these long-suffering fans have no loyalty to Wilson, who surely won’t be in East Rutherford past 2025 and definitely isn’t the Giants’ long-term quarterback answer.
Dart might be. There’s at least hope of that being the case. So it’s hard to blame these fans for wanting to at least get a look at the new kid, especially after a two-pick half for Wilson, whose first interception Sunday night also came on a deep ball.
Dart didn’t play in the Week 1 loss at Washington. He got three snaps during last week’s crushing loss in Dallas, as he handed off twice and ran a quarterback keeper once.
Dart impressed during training camp practices and preseason games this summer, so he jumped ahead of Jameis Winston for the No. 2 spot on the depth chart heading into Week 1.
Still, it had been evident well before the depth chart change that Dart was effectively the No. 2 option, behind Wilson.
How soon until he becomes No. 1 for good?
