If at first you don’t succeed…
Ciryl Gane is currently training for his third (and perhaps final) crack at the undisputed heavyweight crown, having already come up short in 265-pound title fights against Francis Ngannou (UFC 270) and Jon Jones (UFC 285). But those losses helped forge a championship mindset for “Bon Gamin” as he gears up for his Tom Aspinall showdown atop the UFC 321 pay-per-view (PPV) fight card next month in Abu Dhabi.
Gane remains a sizable underdog against the well-rounded Brit.
“All of that — the [press] conference, the media, everything is heavy for the fighter,” Gane recently told Adam Catterall. “I remember against Francis, it was so, so, so heavy. It was not easy. This is good because you must be prepared for that. This added a little bit more pressure. I remember, for Jon Jones, it was easier so I’m sure for the next one it’s going to be easy.”
Gane, 35, has only competed once over the last two years (and it did not go well).
“I got my experience, I already did one year without fighting because of COVID [and] because people don’t accept the fight,“ Gane continued. ”Every time we stay focused, we stay professional and we trust the work of UFC. We just keep waiting and training at the gym. Tom Aspinall is a really tough guy. He’s a good fighter. I’m also a good fighter, so it’s going to be a beautiful matchup.“
Or a beautiful disaster.
Aspinall (15-3) and Gane (13-2) were scheduled to throw down multiple times in the past, but “Bon Gamin” had other commitments. In addition, Gane never seemed that interested in fighting the British bruiser until he laid claim to the undisputed heavyweight title.
