Texas A&M’s SEC schedule is shifting, with three annual matchups locked in—sparking debate over tradition, rivalry, and future implications.
There are a lot of changes unfolding in college football right now, and one that’s been top of mind for SEC fans ever since Commissioner Greg Sankey announced in August that the conference would assign permanent opponents for each team.
Texas A&M has several programs with deep-rooted histories, along with a few newer rivalries that have emerged over the past decade. So when the SEC revealed its plan, one obvious matchup stood out: the Texas Longhorns. Beyond that, the other two selections felt more uncertain. LSU, Arkansas, South Carolina, Mississippi State, and even Ole Miss all would have been compelling choices.
However, when the official list was released, one surprising inclusion raised eyebrows—Missouri. That means for the next three seasons, the Aggies will face Texas, LSU, and Missouri annually. While the Longhorns and LSU are excellent picks, Missouri sparked mixed reactions. Many fans had anticipated Arkansas or South Carolina, especially considering the Razorbacks’ rivalry with A&M spans nearly a century and multiple conferences. Not having them as a yearly opponent from the start is disappointing, but these matchups can be reevaluated after four years. At that point, perhaps the schedule will return to a more traditional opponent.
Below is a brief history of each opponent:
Missouri Tigers
- Overall record: 10–7 (A&M leads the series from 1957 to 2024)
- Last ten games: 6–4 in favor of Missouri
Although the Aggies and Tigers have shared time in both the Big 12 and SEC, they’ve only faced off 17 times. There’s no genuine rivalry between the programs or their fan bases. Still, Missouri has been on an upward trajectory in recent years, and the matchup could evolve into something more meaningful. Swapping Arkansas for Missouri as a guaranteed opponent won’t sit well with everyone, but sometimes change brings opportunity.
LSU Tigers
- Overall record: 33–24–3 (LSU leads the series from 1899 to 2024)
- Last ten games: 6–4 in favor of LSU
This has become one of the more compelling SEC rivalries for the Aggies across all sports over the past decade. One of the most memorable contests was the 74–72 overtime thriller that’s frequently replayed on sports networks. Since that game, the home team has won each of the last six matchups. It’s a spirited rivalry—intense, yet grounded in mutual respect.
Texas Longhorns
- Overall record: 77–37–5 (Texas leads the series from 1894 to 2024)
- Last ten games: 7–3 in favor of Texas
This was the only obvious choice, and as long as both teams share a conference, they should meet annually. Despite Texas dominating the series historically, the rivalry remains fiercely competitive. Fans were eager to reignite the matchup when the Longhorns joined the SEC last season. At the moment, Texas holds the bragging rights, but A&M is determined to notch its first win over the Longhorns since 2010.
