The Houston Rockets made a huge move toward title contention this summer, trading for 15-time All-Star Kevin Durant.

After an underwhelming tenure with the Phoenix Suns, Durant was traded to Houston in a historic seven-team deal. The two-time NBA champion will join a Rockets team that finished second in the Western Conference last season before being eliminated by the Golden State Warriors in the opening round of the playoffs.

Entering his age-37 season, Durant will look to mentor Houston’s rising stars while competing for his third title in a star-studded Western Conference. In the twilight of his career, playing alongside young options like Amen Thompson, Alperen Sengun, Jabari Smith Jr. and Reed Sheppard may foreshadow a new change for Durant following his eventual retirement from the game.

Durant hints at coaching career in recent interview

Speaking at CNBC’s Sport and Boardroom Game Plan on Sept. 16, Durant was asked whether he would consider coaching one day and didn’t entirely rule out the idea.

“Some days I would and some days I wouldn’t,” he said. “It’s tough dealing with personalities. Some days I’m up for it and some days I’m not, but we’ll see.”

Durant has proven to be one of the most skilled basketball players to ever walk the Earth, which could translate into a potential coaching career.

It isn’t uncommon for former players to join an NBA coaching staff. For example, Rockets head coach Ime Udoka spent seven years in the league before ultimately becoming an assistant coach for the San Antonio Spurs in 2012-13.

While Durant is still playing at a high level and isn’t expected to retire in the near future, it’s certainly something to think about for the superstar forward.
