We break down Joel Klatt's top ten teams as he sees them and whether we agree or not. Where does he have Ohio State after Week 4?
Ohio State football was off this week, preparing for a road trip to Washington, but there was plenty of other action happening in week four of college football. There were some big-time conference matchups, a couple of upsets, and some unexpected blowouts. It's what makes college football so great ... You just never know what's going to happen week to week.
With the Buckeyes on a bye week, Joel Klatt made his picks once again for his personal top ten teams in the country. Ohio State has held steady at No. 1 in Klatt's rankings all year, but did any other teams take advantage of opportunities to move up and maybe even past the Bucks? Where is Penn State? What about Oregon? How about the Miami Hurricanes? Time to see if there were any movers and shakers after week four.
No. 10 - Texas Longhorns
Last week's ranking: No. 8
What we think
Texas continues to fall in Klatt's eyes, and we think it's justified. The defense is one of the best in the country, but Arch Manning still has a lot to prove against good competition. He may have thrown for more than 300 yards in a 55-0 drubbing of Sam Houston State, but the taunting (that should have been an unsportsmanlike penalty) tells us he's feeling the pressure.
No. 9 - Indiana Hoosiers
Last week's ranking: N/A
What we think
Well, well, well, would you look at who's back in the top ten? If it isn't Curt "Google me" Cignetti and the Indiana Hoosiers. Everyone thought last year was a fluke. Maybe it wasn't. The Hoosiers throttled No. 9 Illinois 63-10 this past weekend. Indiana still has some heavy lifting to do with both Oregon and Penn State on the schedule, but Cignetti could have the Hoosiers in the college football playoff two years in a row.
No. 8 - Oklahoma Sooners
Last week's ranking - No. 7
What we think
The Sooners got another win over a ranked opponent... and they dropped? It doesn't make sense in our opinion. There are teams ahead of Oklahoma on this list who have zero wins against current ranked opponents. The Sooners get one more cupcake in Kent State before playing ranked opponents in six of their last seven contests.
No. 7 - LSU Tigers
Last week's ranking - No. 2
What we think
That week one win over Clemson is looking less and less impressive. And really, LSU has looked more and more pedestrian. The Tigers head to Oxford to take on No. 13 Ole Miss. LSU fans might be calling for Brian Kelly's head once again if the Tigers can't get it done against the Rebels.
No. 6 - Florida State Seminoles
Last week's ranking - No. 9
What we think
Taking Kent State behind the woodshed really spoke volumes in Klatt's opinion, so much so that Florida State moved up three spots in his poll. The 'Noles look like they are back, but hopefully they don't look past a road test in Charlottesville, before a home matchup against rival Miami in two weeks.
No. 5 - Oregon Ducks
Last week's ranking - No. 3
What we think
Klatt's rankings are all over the place this week. Oregon embarrassed rival Oregon State this past weekend, and the Ducks have looked dominant in every game they've played to this point. However, we're going to find out a lot about Dan Lanning's team when they head to Happy Valley for Penn State's annual "White Out" game.
No. 4 - Penn State Nittany Lions
Last week's ranking - No. 4
What we think
Curious that Penn State doesn't play and stays put while Oregon was dominant in a rivalry game and dropped two spots behind the Nittany Lions. I guess Joel feels like Penn State is the better team. We'll find out on Saturday night.
No. 3 - Georgia Bulldogs
Last week's ranking - No. 5
What we think
Get a bye week, move up a couple of spots. Seems to be a theme this week. Georgia gets another big test this week when Alabama comes to town. It never disappoints when these two get together.
No. 2 - Miami Hurricanes
Last week's ranking - No. 6
What we think
Miami beat a very average Florida team over the weekend. While it felt like the Hurricanes were dominating the game, the final score wasn't indicative of a dominating performance. The 'Canes get a bye week to prepare for Florida State in Tallahassee.
No. 1 - Ohio State Buckeyes
Last week's ranking - No. 1
What we think
Ohio State has been the most complete team in the country to this point. A road trip to Seattle to take on the Washington Huskies is the next hurdle for a team looking to stay on top of the college football landscape. But don't take Washington lightly. Huskie Stadium is consistently ranked as one of the toughest places to play in the country.
