Saraland won the Alabama 6A state title in 2022, then lost in the state title game each of the last two seasons. Expectations were high entering this fall for the Spartans once again, though it had to replace one of its best quarterbacks in recent memory.

K.J. Lacey finished as a four-star prospect and signed with Texas last cycle. Saraland has since tasked Jamison Roberts with replacing the blue-chipper under center. While the junior may be an unranked prospect, he’s playing like a blue-chipper, too.

On Friday, Roberts put together a six-touchdown performance in a 43-10 win over McGill-Toolen Catholic. The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder threw for 170 yards and three scores, then added 102 rushing yards and three more touchdowns with his legs.

The win saw Saraland improve to 5-0 on the year. Roberts’ season stats are stellar. Completing 76 percent of his passes, the junior is now up to 1,114 passing yards and 12 scores while compiling an additional nine rushing TDs and 273 yards on the ground.

Roberts hasn’t wavered one bit this season and that’s thanks in-part to him getting a pair of starts last season while Lacey sat out with a knee injury. In those two opportunities, the then-sophomore threw for nearly 400 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Spartans check in as the No. 4 team in the Yellowhammer State, per the Massey Ratings. That’s good for No. 57 nationally, too.

They opened the 2025 season with a massive ranked victory over Jackson, the defending 4A state champs. Roberts out-dueled four-star senior South Carolina QB commit Landon Duckworth, throwing for 203 yards and two scores in a tight 17-6 win.

It’s been dominance over a weak schedule since then. The Saraland offense is averaging 46.5 points across its last four games and its defense has been just as good, allowing just 31 points in those games. Just two ranked matchups are left on the regular-season schedule and the Spartans are favored to win out heading into the postseason.

Saraland is on a bye this week and will return to action on Oct. 3 against Baldwin County. Roberts currently holds offers from the likes of South Alabama, Tulane, Troy, Georgia Southern, App State and Florida Atlantic.
