Miami Dolphins have clear potential trade partner for Jaelan Phillips

If the Miami Dolphins decide to move edge rusher Jaelan Phillips at the trade deadline, there is one team that is very clearly a viable trade partner for the former first-round pick.

With the way things are going with the Miami Dolphins early this season, the team is on a crash course to being a seller at the trade deadline.

The Dolphins are 0-3 after three games and have more players-only meetings than they have wins. Thankfully, the schedule isn't too daunting over the next five weeks, but with how poorly Miami has played, nothing is a given.

One of the players who could hit the trade block at the deadline is edge rusher Jaelan Phillips, who is in the final year of his contract in 2025.

Niners Wire's Kyle Madson recently mentioned Phillips as a possible trade target for the San Francisco 49ers, which makes total sense.

Phillips is on his fifth-year option and a free agent after the season. The 2021 first-round pick had 22.0 sacks his first two-and-a-half years before being slowed down by injury in the second of 2022, 2023 and 2024. Despite the lack of production the last couple of seasons, it may be worth a late-round pick to see if the 49ers can get Phillips back to the form he had early in his NFL career.

The 49ers recently lost Nick Bosa for the season due to a torn ACL, leaving a gaping hole in their defense that won't easily be filled.

Phillips would be a strong attempt to do so, though. The former first-round pick has been plagued by injuries in recent years, but before that he had tallied 22 sacks over his first 42 games in the NFL, so he has the tools to be a difference-maker.

Phillips will garner plenty of interest if he hits the trade block but doesn't figure to cost a ton given his injury history and impending free-agent status.

The Niners would likely have to give up an a late Day 2 pick, at most, for Phillips' services. It's possible a fourth-round pick would be enough to get it done.

Of course, San Fran's interest in making such a trade will depend upon how the team is doing at the deadline.

Right now, the Niners look like they'll be contending after a 3-0 start, so a big splash for an edge rusher to replace Bosa remains very possible.
