After earning Second Team honors in the toughest league in all of high school football as a junior, JSerra LB Rocco Tompkins wasted no time in reaching another gear as a senior.

Look no further than his performance on Sep. 12 to help lead the Lions to a 24-21 victory over formidable Oak Hills. He totaled 20 tackles, three TFLs, a sack, and a rushing touchdown, and West Coast Preps called it a once-in-a-lifetime performance, writing, "Tompkins turned in one of the best all-around games you’ll see on a high school field... Tompkins seemed to be everywhere, stuffing runs, chasing down quarterbacks and even sparking the offense when needed... His performance didn’t just help JSerra grind out a win, he was the main reason the Lions got past a tough Oak Hills."

Through five games, Tompkins is making a strong case for himself as one of California's absolute best linebackers. In just five games, he's totaled a staggering 84 tackles, 32 solo tackles, six tackles for loss, two sacks, six pass break-ups, and one blocked punt – every one of which is a team-high for the Trinity League powerhouse.

For his amazing performance against Oak Hills, Tompkins has been voted The Sporting News' California football Player of the Week for Week Three. Speaking of staggering totals, Tompkins racked up 29,727 fan votes, good for 62.37% of the polling, to take home the award.

Tompkins faced tremendous competition from Cardinal Newman RB Malakai Pathoumnourack, who received a whopping 15,272 votes (32.04%) to claim second place for turning 13 carries into 174 yards and five touchdowns in a 49-0 blowout of Armijo. Rounding out the top three with 2,287 votes was Norco quarterback Julian Medina, who completed 28 of 36 passes (77.8%) for 325 yards, three touchdowns, and no interceptions with 93 rushing yards to beat Etiwanda 56-23.

In Week Four, Tompkins delivered his second consecutive 20-tackle, one-sack performance as JSerra edged out Leuzinger 39-35 to move to 3-2 entering Trinity League play. JSerra now has a Week Five bye before opening conference play on Oct. 3 at home against St. John Bosco.
