The Philadelphia Phillies (92-65) had the Miami Marlins (77-80) on the hook for most of the game but couldn’t weather the storm as the Fish overcame a 3-0 deficit to take the series’ opener 6-5 on Tuesday night.
Kyle Schwarber began the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with his 54th home run of the season, inching closer to Ryan Howard’s franchise mark of 58 with five games remaining.
Max Kepler led off the bottom of the second with a double and the Phillies’ minor leagues offensive player of the year, Otto Kemp, punched a first-pitch sinker just over the fence in right for a two-out, two-run homer to make it a 3-0 lead.
Cristopher Sanchez had a prototypical outing, going seven scoreless innings with three hits, a walk and six strikeouts.
David Robertson allowed the Marlins back into the game with a one-out home run surrendered to Griffin Conine and a couple of two-out singles to Otto Lopez and Liam Hicks, Lopez scoring on a bad throw by Harrison Bader.
After opening the bottom of the ninth with a strikeout, Jhoan Duran laid an 0-2 fastball in the center of the plate for Heriberto Hernandez to ship it over the left field wall to tie the game.
JT Realmuto took a foul ball off the hand in the bottom of the ninth so he was lifted for Rafael Marchan, who led off the bottom of the ninth with a single. Max Kepler went down 0-2 in the count before some heavy rain came down the game took an hour break. Kepler would ultimately work an eight-pitch count after the delay but went down swinging and the Marlins got Weston Wilson and Bryson Stott to line out to take the game to extras.
Orion Kerkering allowed a leadoff walk, a one-out RBI single and an RBI fielder’s choice to give the Marlins a 5-3 lead.
Marlins’ lefty, Josh Simpson, got two outs against Kemp and Bader before electing to intentionally walk Schwarber. Consecutive RBI singles by Alec Bohm and Nick Castellanos tied it back up before Marchan struck out to extend the game to the eleventh.
Lou Trivino gave up a single and sacrifice fly in the top of the eleventh to give the Marlins’ a 6-5 lead.
Josh Simpson stayed in for the eleventh and got three straight ground outs by Kepler, Wilson and Stott to end it.
Jesus Luzardo faces right-hander, Ryan Weathers, tomorrow night in the middle game of the series.
