TORONTO — Instant reactions from the Red Sox' 4-1 win over the Blue Jays at Rogers Centre on Tuesday:
1) The Red Sox (86-71) remain in the second AL Wild Card spot, one game ahead of the Tigers and one and a half games ahead of the Astros. Houston will play the Athletics at 10:05 p.m. eastern time.
2) Catcher Carlos Narváez’s two-run double in the sixth inning broke his 0-for-17 slump and put Boston ahead 4-1.
3) Starter Lucas Giolito labored, throwing 98 pitches in just 4 ⅔ innings. He limited damage, though, allowing one run on three hits and four walks while striking out three. His 49 four-seam fastballs averaged 92.1 mph, which is down from his season average of 93.3 mph.
4) First baseman Nathaniel Lowe put the Red Sox ahead 1-0 in the second inning with an RBI single. He extended the lead to 2-1 in the sixth with another RBI single. He has a six-game hitting streak.
5) Righty Garrett Whitlock tossed a perfect seventh inning, striking out Daulton Varsho swinging and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. looking. He has allowed one earned run over his last 29 innings (30 appearances) dating back to July 6.
