A potentially serious injury marred a fantastic debut for the young Italian.
Liverpool FC defender Giovanni Leoni could be set for a spell on the sidelines after he was strechered off on his debut for the club against Southampton in League Cup action at Anfield.
Leoni was taken off for Milos Kerkez in the 81st minute, following an awkward collison near the sideline. After a hard landing, Leoni clutched his knee and had to be stretchered off. Fears of an anterior cruciate ligament injury immediately sprung to mind for many on social media.
It was a worrying end to what had been a fantastic debut from the Italian youngster. He was commanding, calm, and composed in the heart of the Liverpool defence, and justified why Parma wanted a cool 40 million euros for him initially.
Head coach Arne Slot urged patience as the club await the results of a scan to know the full extent of Leoni’s possible injury:
“He is down because, for him, it didn’t feel good immediately. This is something we have to assess. Normally these things don’t happen in five or 10 minutes. You have to wait until tomorrow to see how he comes in and maybe do an MRI scan to know more and see how serious it is.
“Normally, the emotions of a player tell you a lot. I saw during the weekend in the Eredivisie that a player went out completely in tears. It proved to be he was right. Let’s hope for the best.”
I’m honestly more amused that Arne has time to pay attention to the Eredivisie than anything but yeah, what he said. Let’s hope the injury isn’t as bad as it first seemed.
