New combinations 'sparking excitement' as fresh Euro stage beckons

For the first time in three seasons, Celtic take their place not in the glamorous spotlight of the Champions League, but instead in its less celebrated sibling, the Europa League. A level, however, where Celtic can still aim to make real progress. If that's to happen, much will depend on the "connections" Brendan Rodgers spoke of in his pre-match briefing.

It is European matchday one – though not quite as we've known it in recent years.

For the first time in three seasons, Celtic take their place not in the glamorous spotlight of the Champions League, but instead in its less celebrated sibling, the Europa League.

We're here on merit - or rather, because of our shortcomings against Kairat Almaty - and the challenge now is to make the most of this new stage.

It may not be where we planned to be, but the competition brings its own intrigue, fresh opportunities, and the reality is – for now at least – this might just be our level.

A level, however, where Celtic can still aim to make real progress.

If that's to happen, much will depend on the "connections" Brendan Rodgers spoke of in his pre-match briefing. The new partnerships that must quickly take root in this evolving side.

The days of Alistair Johnston linking with Nicolas Kuhn, or Greg Taylor with Daizen Maeda, are behind us. But new combinations are already sparking excitement.

The prospect of Kieran Tierney dovetailing with man-of-the-match magnet Sebastian Tounekti is one to relish, while Benji Nygren, Colby Donovan and Kelechi Iheanacho will all be hungry to make their mark.

The first test, however, is among the toughest possible at this albeit lower level.

Red Star Belgrade head into the game in red-hot form – seven wins from seven in the league, with 30 goals scored.

They represent a sterner challenge than anything Celtic have faced this season.

Like us, they fell at the final Champions League hurdle, undone by Cypriot champions Pafos, and they too will be desperate to appease their fans by progressing through this competition.

All told, it promises to be a compelling night in the intimidating Rajko Mitic Stadium as two former European Cup winners collide in search of a winning start to their continental campaign.

May the best team win. So long as that team is Celtic.
