BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — The Head Coach of the Men’s Basketball at CSUB is stepping down as of Wednesday, according to school officials.
According to the school, Head Coach Rod Barnes has decided to end his tenure with CSUB immediately.
The school said Assistant Coach Mike Scott will serve as interim head coach.
Barnes coached CSUB for 14 seasons, accumulating a 210-231 record with the team.
In the statement, CSUB President Vernon B. Harper Jr. said, quote, “I want to thank Coach Barnes for guiding our scholar-athletes since 2011 and for emphasizing academic excellence, teamwork, community engagement and the highest level of competition. His enthusiasm for our teams and student-athletes created excitement and spirit in the Icardo Center that spread beyond our campus, into the greater community, deepening loyalty to CSUB and nurturing a new generation of Roadrunner fans.”
Barnes departure comes just weeks after CSUB assistant basketball coach Kevin Mays was charged with several felonies including child pornography, pimping, and pandering.
It also comes soon after CSUB announced that athletic director Kyle Conder was quote, “no longer with the university.”
Mays pleaded not guilty to all charges, and is now on administrative leave.
