Kaizer Chiefs assistant coach Khalil Ben Youssef has weighed in on the debut performance of newly signed forward Khanyisa Mayo.
The 27-year-old frontman opened the scoring in the one-all draw with Marumo Gallants on Wednesday after completing a loan move from CR Belouizdad of Algeria.
However, Mayo was withdrawn towards the hour mark and the Chiefs second in command attributed the substitution to match fitness and sharpness.
“For Khanyisa Mayo, he was waiting for his papers and now he is available to play for us in the PSL, but we know that physically he is not ready to play 90 minutes. It was prepared before the game that he would play for between 50 to 60 minutes,” said Ben Youssef.
Ben Youssef went on to hail Mayo’s performance, highlighting how the former Cape Town City talisman helped the team to create clear-cut goal scoring chances.
“I think the performance of Mayo, starting for the first time with the team, I think he did very well. He gave us a lot of opportunities and also, he scored the first goal. We need more from Mayo because we know his quality, we know what he can do and bring to the team,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Gallants stalemate has the Soweto giants fixated in position three on the Betway Premiership standings with 14 points accumulated after seven matches.
Chiefs will now shift their focus to overturning the one-goal deficit against Angolan side Kabuscorp SCP in the second leg of the CAF Confederation Cup first preliminary round at FNB Stadium on Saturday.
