The Georgia Bulldogs lost one of the top pass rushers to the transfer portal this offseason. Now he's second in the SEC in sacks
Former Georgia Bulldogs outside linebacker Damon Wilson transferred to the Missouri Tigers during the offseason and he's already made an instant impact with the Tigers. In fact, Wilson ranks second in the SEC in sacks with 3 1/2 entering Week 5. Wilson is only ranked behind Arkansas defensive lineman Quincy Rhodes, who has five sacks this season.
Wilson has nearly as many sacks as Georgia has as a team (four total sacks). Georgia has one player with multiple sacks in outside linebacker Chris Cole.
The Bulldogs need to get more pass rush production in order to get off the field. Georgia recorded just one sack on Tennessee's 36 pass attempts in Week 3 and allowed Tennessee to score 41 points including overtime. Georgia coach Kirby Smart spoke about the Bulldogs' pass rush ahead of the Alabama game.
"Finish on the quarterback," said Smart on Georgia's pass rush struggles. "We had multiple opportunities. Their guy was better than the guy that had to get them, but we had guys back there. You have to finish on the quarterback."
Of all the players that transferred this offseason, Georgia arguably misses Wilson the most. The Bulldogs' pass rush and defensive line has not been as disruptive this season as it has been in the past.
Wilson's departure contributed to Georgia losing the vast majority of its 2024 sack production, which spelled trouble for the Bulldogs. Georgia added Army transfer Elo Modozie this spring, but so far he has no sacks and just two tackles and has not made a big impact.
