Nick Lodolo leaves Reds start with groin injury

Reds fans once again hold their breath.

The good news is that Nick Lodolo was positively brilliant for the Cincinnati Reds on Thursday afternoon in his start against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

Across 6.1 IP, Lodolo fanned 12 Bucs and allowed just 2 hits and a walk, with nary a runner scoring in Great American Ball Park as the Reds tried their best to salvage a game from this series. The bad news, though, is that he left after his 81st pitch in the Top of the 7th after consulting with trainers following an awkward reaction to a pitch.

According to Jim Day on the broadcast, it’s a groin issue, the type of soft-tissue problem that typically has a very wide range of severity. The Reds later confirmed it’s his right groin and that he left as a ‘precaution.’

It’s far too early to speculate just how bad it is, or how long it’ll keep him on the shelf (if at all). What the schedule had already dictated was that today would be Lodolo’s final start of the regular season, but he obviously figured to be a big, big part of Cincinnati’s rotation should they find a way to sneak into the postseason, too.

The 6.1 IP today push his season total to 155.2, a career high.

Lodolo exited with the Reds up 2-0, and the Pirates later plated a run in the Top of the 8th to pull within 2-1. A win would pull the Reds back within a half-game of the New York Mets, who wrap their series against the Chicago Cubs later today.
