Not only has the tournament final been set, but so has the draw and other details have been confirmed.
It has been three months since Cruz Azul was crowned the 2025 Concacaf Champions Cup after they crushed MLS side Vancouver 5-0 back in June. Today, Concacaf has confirmed the dates for the draw and the final, plus some key details for the upcoming competition.
The 2026 tournament will take place between February and May of 2026 with the final to take place on Saturday May 30, 2026. A total of 27 teams will compete for the trophy and up to this date, nine teams have already secured their spot in the competition.
Those clubs are:
Inter Miami (MLS), LA Galaxy (MLS), Seattle Sounders (MLS), Club América (Liga MX), Cruz Azul (Liga MX), Toluca (Liga MX), Monterrey (Liga MX), Pumas (Liga MX) and Tigres (Liga MX).
The remaining 18 spots will be determined by domestic cups/league competitions which will wrap up by December. The draw will then take place on December 9, 2025 in Miami, Florida which fans can watch through Concacaf’s YouTube channel.
Historically, Mexican clubs have dominated the competition. During 2006 to 2021 Liga MX teams won a consecutive 16 times. In total, Liga MX has come out on top a whopping 39 times. Club América has the most titles at seven with Pachuca and Cruz Azul tied for second with six titles. While América is a giant in the North American region, they have been in a drought since 2016 and the Champions Cup trophy is the only trophy that André Jardine is missing in his cabinet.
The last time a club NOT from the U.S./Mexico won the tournament was back in 2005 when Costa Rican side Saprissa were crowned champions. They have won the tournament a total of three times. Before the year 2000 the competition winners were a mix between all the federations but since the year 2000 Mexico and the U.S. took over with Mexico on top. Will the 2026 competition be any different or will Liga MX come out on top like they have historically?
