Will James Conner play again this season? Latest injury update on Cardinals RB originally appeared on The Sporting News

The Arizona Cardinals lost their starting running back, James Conner, in the Week 3 loss to the San Francisco 49ers.

Conner suffered the injury in the second half and was later diagnosed with an ankle issue. It was immediately clear Conner's injury was serious after he didn't get up following the play and was eventually carted off the field.

It's quite clear that Conner is going to miss significant time, but will the Cardinals get him back at any point later this season?

Here's what we know.

Will James Conner play again in 2025?

Conner has been placed on injured reserve after undergoing surgery on his ankle and head coach Jonathan Gannon revealed that Conner will indeed miss the remainder of the 2025 season.

"One of your leaders, a captain. You hate that it happened," Gannon said of Conner. "I feel terrible, but I know he'll take the right attitude and bounce back. Picking up that slack, both the player and the person, we're all going to have to collectively do it, truthfully.

"But that's a bummer just like all of our guys who've gotten hurt. But just knowing what type of player and person he is it's tough to replace, but we have to. So that's what we'll do," Gannon concluded.

Trey Benson takes over as RB1

Benson was listed as the RB2 on the depth chart behind Conner and was the only Cardinals back with a role in the offense outside of the veteran when he was healthy, so Benson will be the next man up in Arizona.

A 2024 second-round pick, Benson didn't see the field much in his rookie season, with the Florida State product playing just 17% of snaps and seeing 69 touches.

So far this season, Benson has shown plenty of promise and now has a golden opportunity to cement himself as Arizona's RB1 for the long haul.
