Pat Kelsey discusses rumored fight with Mark Pope while praising UK head coach

Kelsey talked about the rumored incident on the recruiting trail.

Over the last couple of weeks, we have seen the rumors on social media and message boards about a heated exchange between Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey at the beginning of the recruitment period.

What exactly that exchange entailed is not totally clear. Some initial reports suggested that the two coaches were almost at the point of getting physical, and others suggested it was just an exchange of words, with emotions running high.

Now, Pat Kelsey is talking about that incident. Kelsey was a guest at the Salute to the Game luncheon for the St. X – Trinity football game, where he spoke about the incident.

At the event, Kelsey mentioned a recent dream about attending a UFC fight, but when he looked up at the screen, it showed the main event being Kelsey vs. Pope.

Kelsey then used that to lead into noting that he and Pope are both competitors, and compete on the court as well as on the recruiting trail.

Kelsey added that he and Pope respect each other, and said Pope is “one of the finest human beings in coaching” and “a world-class father and world-class husband.”

But afterward, he made sure to note he “still wants to tear his face off when we [Kentucky and Louisville] play in November.”

So where does the truth lie when it comes to the alleged incident outside Tay Kinney’s apartment? Who knows for sure. What we know is this: Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey are both very competitive individuals who aim to do everything they can to succeed, but at the end of the day, respect each other.

Mark Pope and Pat Kelsey in a UFC main event would be quite the spectacle though…
