A female rugby team will be running taster sessions next month on the 26 of October and 18 of January to encourage more women into the sport.

Phoenix Flames in Taplow, Buckinghamshire, are urging people to "get involved and not just watch the women's rugby during the World Cup".

Lia Carey, 22, from Cippenham, Berkshire who helped start the team in 2017, said she has always been keen to play, and worked to kickstart a women's team a few years ago but her efforts were stifled by the pandemic.

She said : "I've been around rugby my whole life because of my dad and twin brother and I've always wanted to play on a girls' team."

Ms Carey said Phoenix Flames "emerged from the ashes" in March this year following from the pandemic and a personal injury.

She said she feels a lot of women have not been encouraged to play sport but the Lionesses (England women's football team) have raised the profile and "definitely pushed the women's rugby as well".

She described the team as a "lovely bunch" aged between 19 to 47.

She said some of the team never thought about playing before but now they "loved it".

"It's not just about the rugby, it's about playing as a team and finding a group of friends you can have a laugh with," she added.

Coach Ken Nathan said the rugby union has really helped provide a platform for the women's game.

He said: "The RFU (Rugby Football Union) has set up what's called the Inner Warrior League so basically it's a mechanism for anybody just to pitch up and play.

"As an embryonic team we entered and we play against other clubs that are just starting out in rugby.

"It doesn't matter how many people are in your team, the idea is to come along and play.

"We have players still with us now from our last taster session and we've progressed into playing a match against Beaconsfield."

"It was absolutely fabulous and we had a lot of support which was incredible," he added.
