Edoardo Bove on his Future in Football: “I’m not ruling anything out”

In a recent interview with CdS, Bove opened up on his health, new perspective on life and desire to return to the pitch

Ten months after suffering a cardiac event on the pitch, Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove, who was on loan with Fiorentina when he collapsed during a match against Inter Milan, remains determined to return to the pitch. In an interview with the Corriere dello Sport, Bove, 23, opened up on his recovery, future in football, and even his budding relationship with Wolfsburg midfielder Christian Eriksen, who famously suffered a similar episode during Euro 2020.

As one would expect, given the severity of the cardiac event and Bove’s career of choice, his condition is frequently monitored:

“I’ve probably had around ten visits, many of them just routine check-ups — electrocardiograms, stress tests, blood pressure monitoring, along with arrhythmia exams and electrophysiological studies. I’m ready. The doctors are right to be cautious… It will still take some time, but I feel like things are coming full circle.”

He also opened up on his evolving relationship with pain and how the events of last December provided him a fresh perspective on life outside of football:

“It makes me feel alive. I recognize it, it doesn’t scare me—I accept it. There’s no point in fighting it. Pain made me think about what a normal life might be like. I have lots of friends who are studying or working, and over these past months, there were times when I was afraid I might have to stop playing. If I hadn’t had that accident, I never would have experienced this side of life. It made me reflect on what I might want to do in the future. Situations like mine are full of stages you have to go through.”

Despite looking at life through a new lens, Bove remains committed to returning to the pitch and spoke about the precautions his medical team is taking and his future with Roma:

“We’re talking to Roma. I’m under contract until June 2028. It’s still a long way to go.”

“The law doesn’t allow me to play in Italy, and I doubt that changes. But I’m not ruling anything out. The doctors haven’t reached a conclusion yet — maybe I’m fine. I have full awareness of the situation, I feel great, and I really want to return to my passion.”

Bove spoke on the support he’s received from Eriksen:

“I’ve spoken with Christian Eriksen more than once, in the early days and even in the summer. We share something in common, even though we haven’t met in person. I feel close to him, and I’m glad he has found another club.”

And finally, Bove spoke about his current relationship to the game:

“I only watch Roma and Fiorentina now — the rest bother me. Even my father watches less football now, though he’s a passionate fan. I think it’s a natural reaction… For me, especially in the beginning, it wasn’t as hard as for those around me: I didn’t understand how serious it was — I thought I had merely fainted. They knew they might’ve lost a son.”
