The Arizona cross country program hosted the annual Dave Murray Invitational Saturday morning at Tucson Country Club, where the men’s team took first place and the women placed second.
The men won the home event for the first time since 2022. Arizona’s Evan Tanui won the men’s 8K with a time of 24:22.1. Bryson Neilsen finished second overall with a time of 24:40.7. Tanui and Neilsen are both freshmen.
Michael Urbanski placed seventh, Connor Grusendorf placed 10th and and Cooper Quigley placed 20th to round out the Wildcats’ top five scorers.
The Arizona men finished with 41 points, well ahead of runner-up GCU. UTEP took third, followed by NMSU and GCU.
On the women’s side, Arizona’s Praise Chepkemboi led the Wildcats with a second place finish of 22:07.1. Amelia North took seventh with a time of 22:45.3. Like on the men’s side, Arizona’s top two finishers in the women’s race are freshmen.
Laina Friedmann placed 8th, Kara Mickelson placed 10th and Kayla Lark placed 20th to give Arizona five scorers.
The women earned 46 points, behind NMSU’s 29. GCU placed third, followed by Mesa CC and ASU.
Arizona will next compete at the Highlander Invitational in Riverside, Calif. on Oct. 18.
