MC Alger have progressed to the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League after beating FC Fassell 3-0 on Saturday.

The Algerian champions had to dig deep in Algiers after a goalless draw with the 2024/25 Liberian Premier League winners in Monrovia last Saturday.

Ayoub Abdellaoui opened the scoring in the 19th minute, before forward Soufiane Bayazid doubled the lead on the stroke of half time, while Amine Messoussa sealed the win in the 90th minute.

Mokwena’s men will face the winner between Colombe Sportive of Cameroon and Senegal’s ASC Jaraaf for a spot in the group stages.

The South African tactician has been tasked with winning the coveted CAF Champions League title, with the club’s sole triumph dating back to 1976.

What’s more, Mokwena is expected to retain the league title and win domestic cup competitions in the Algerian topflight.

This comes after the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor had a tumultuous spell with Moroccan giants Wydad Athletic Club last season.

Meanwhile, MCA will now shift their focus to the Algerian Ligue 1, where they are set to tackle ES Mostaganem on Thursday, 02 October.
