Will Klein was optioned, Nick Frasso was called up to be placed on the 60-day injured list to make 40-man roster room
Veteran left-hander Andrew Heaney is back in the majors with the Dodgers for a second time, selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City on Saturday, with two days to go in the regular season.
The 34-year-old Heaney was released by the Pirates on August 29, then two days later signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers, for whom he pitched in 2022. In four games with Triple-A Oklahoma City, Heaney allowed one run in 10 innings, and struck out 13 of his 35 batters faced, a 37.1-percent strikeout rate.
Heaney’s best game for Oklahoma City was his first with them, on September 10, when he struck out eight of his 10 batters faced in three scoreless innings against Sacramento.
Whether Heaney is an actual option for the Dodgers in the postseason remains to be seen, but there’s also the matter of filling innings over these final two days of the regular season in Seattle, while also making sure certain pitchers are rested for a wild card series that will start on Tuesday at Dodger Stadium.
To that end, Will Klein was optioned after pitching each of the last two days, including 30 pitches in 1 2/3 innings in Friday night’s series opener in Seattle.
Nick Frasso got moved to the 60-day injured list to make room for Heaney on the 40-man roster, which at the very least earns Frasso his first two days of major league service time, plus a pro-rated share of the major league minimum salary of $760,000, which over two days comes to $8,172.
If Heaney gets into a game this weekend, the Dodgers will set a franchise record with 62 different players used in 2025, surpassing the 2021 team.
