Everton will be without both Courtney Brosnan and Kelly Gago as Sorensen demands more consistent effort
Brian Sorensen has challenged his Everton Women team to get it right for the full 90 minutes while also praising Brighton & Hove Albion, who meet the Blues in the WSL on Sunday.
The Toffees’ head coach has also confirmed that Everton will be without both Courtney Brosnan and Kelly Gago, while one or two will be assessed ahead of the fixture on the South Coast, after picking up knocks in the midweek defeat to Manchester City.
Sorensen has seen his team play well in patches of games so far this season, but with the Blues going into the weekend on the back of three defeats, the Dane is urging his team to play from the first whistle to the last, and is well aware of the threat Dario Vidosic’s team will pose.
“Brighton is a good team, it looks similar to last season in terms of how they approach things,” he said.
“They are well coached and have brought in good players.
“Fran Kirby looks very good at the moment, you need to shut that down.”
“We know that we have to get 90 plus minutes right.
“The effort has to be there all the time. We know we have the skills and tools to do something against them.”
The Opposition
Albion will look to secure a second consecutive win in the WSL as they take on Everton, but will be without forward Madison Haley for the visit of the Merseysiders.
Veteran star Kirby remains the Seagulls biggest attacking threat; the 32-year-old has either scored or assisted in four of her last five WSL starts, and is already off the mark this season, having scored in Brighton’s only defeat in this campaign against Manchester City.
The Seagulls have conceding three goals in three games, but do have goalkeeper Sophie Baggaley in their ranks, who has proven to be a thorn in the side of Everton on more than one occasion.
Previous Meetings
Recent form has favoured Brighton in this fixture, with the Seagulls winning three of the last four WSL meetings against the Blues, including a league double over the Toffees last season.
Everton have conceded in each of their last eight league matches against their weekend opponents, last keeping a clean sheet against Brighton in a 5-0 away win in March 2021.
The Toffees also tasted victory at the home of Brighton in April 2024, and seem to enjoy more success against the Seagulls on the road.
Let’s hope it is the away team celebrating this weekend.
Everton Women take on Brighton & Hove Albion on Sunday, 28 September, at Broadfield Stadium.
Kick-off for the WSL fixture is a 12pm BST (7am ET, 4am PT).
