Manuel Neuer recognizes positive steps for Bayern Munich’s Tom Bischof after Werder Bremen win

It was Bischof’s first start in the Bundesliga and he shone quite well for himself.

In Bayern Munich’s 4-0 routing of Werder Bremen at the Allianz Arena on Friday evening, Tom Bischof was given his first Bundesliga start of the season, which was his first start for Bayern since the FIFA Club World Cup. He started in Bayern’s 1-0 loss to Benfica in Charlotte back at the Club World Cup in what was an underwhelming performance from the whole team in the blistering North Carolina heat. His 90 minutes against Werder Bremen was a far different story.

Joshua Kimmich was just getting over an illness, and Aleksandar Pavlovic was an unused sub in the 4-0 win over Bremen as Vincent Kompany had one eye on Bayern’s trip to take on Cypriote side Pafos FC in the Champions League midweek. It could prove to be a tricky contest, and the Belgian manager did what he could to try to ensure he has fresh legs for the encounter, providing the perfect opportunity for Bischof to show what he’s worth, and he hardly put a foot wrong. He capped off his 90-minute shift in Bayern’s midfield with a lovely assist to Konrad Laimer late in the match in what was the German Rekordmeister’s fourth of four goals on the night.

Speaking after the match, keeper Manuel Neuer was full of praise for Bischof, noting that the 20-year-old has been putting maximum effort into the training sessions at Säbener Straße. “He always gives it his all in training and is a special player who can be very dangerous in the box. He has taken a good step with his starting debut today – for himself and for the team,” Neuer enthused (via @iMiaSanMia).

There was added impetus for Bischof to make the most of the opportunity given to him vs. Bremen, too, as it’s going to get tough for him to get solid minutes once Jamal Musiala makes his return from a lengthy injury layover at some point in November. Kompany is relatively spoiled for choice in attack with Harry Kane, Michael Olise, Nicolas Jackson, an in-form Serge Gnabry, and even Lennart Karl, who has come on and made an impact on more than one occasion.

Nonetheless, there will be more chances for Bischof as Bayern pushes across all three fronts. The fixtures list gets busy just before and after the winter holiday break and, by that point, we’ll have a better idea of where Bayern stands in all competitions.

Bayern Munich was the home side in the Bundesliga on Friday when Werder Bremen came to town.

The Bavarians decimated the visitors 4-0 in a game that was never really close. Bayern Munich was relentless and dominant in every aspect of the match. It is not as if Werder Bremen did not try, but the players just could not match up with the machine that was Bayern Munich.

Let’s get into all of the details — here is what we have on tap for this edition of the Bavarian Podcast Works — Postgame Show:

  • A look at the starting XI — Tom Bischof and Leon Goretzka got the nod in the central midfield because Joshua Kimmich was sick.
  • A rundown of the scoring and substitutions.
