After a dominant victory in Rome two years ago, Luke Donald's players wanted him back for Bethpage. Now, they want him back for Ireland.
FARMINGDALE, N.Y. â Two years ago after a dominant Ryder Cup victory at Marco Simone, Luke Donald's players immediately said they wanted their skipper to return and lead the European team in the 2025 competition at Bethpage Black.
It didn't take long for that to come to fruition, and the result this time was the same as the first. The Euros won for the first time in 13 years on foreign soil, taking down the United States 15-13 and winning for the 11th time in the past 15 Ryder Cups.
Donald has received high praise during his four-year tenure as leader of the Euros, from not only his players but also those on the U.S. side. The Americans' captain, Keegan Bradley, said Donald is the best European captain of all-time.
And it didn't take long for the question to come shortly after victory Sunday night: will Luke Donald captain the team at Adare Manor in two years?
"Two more years, two more years," his 12 players said as they pounded the table in the press conference. Donald simply put his head down and smiled.
Tony Jacklin is the only other European Ryder Cup captain to captain more than twice, doing it four straight years from 1983-89. He's also the only one to win twice in a row.
As for Donald's response? He didn't close the door, but that bridge will be crossed later.
"My answer is I'm going to enjoy tonight."
