Former New York Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. made a plea to the team and NFL to stop using artificial turf following the season-ending injury to wide receiver Malik Nabers on Sunday.
Odell Beckham Jr. sends clear message to Giants, NFL after Malik Nabers injury originally appeared on The Sporting News
The New York Giants and the NFL have been under fire for years now because of the use of artificial turf at MetLife Stadium and around the league, and it might have cost the Giants their star wide receiver, Malik Nabers.
Nabers appeared to get his foot stuck in the MetLife Stadium turf on Sunday while trying to make a catch, leading to a knee injury that is believed to be a season-ending torn ACL, per reports.
Hours after the game was over, former Giants wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. took to social media to send a clear message to the Giants and the NFL:
Get rid of the artificial turf.
"Dear NFL, I mean this with the upmost love and respect. We (The NFL) take all The precautions in the world with EVERYthing else when it comes to players 'health' and “safety”. PLZ. PLZ. PLZ. GET RID OF THE TURF. Thank You in advance. LUV," Beckham wrote on X.
This is a message players and the NFLPA have had for years now, with their belief that artificial turf leads to more injuries. The NFLPA also released a study that they claim shows grass is "significantly safer" for players than artificial turf.
However, the league countered with data that shows injury rates were similar between artificial and grass surfaces.
"The NFL's rate of noncontact lower-extremity injuries was nearly the same on synthetic and natural turf in 2023, league officials told ESPN, the second time in three years those trend lines have essentially intersected," ESPN's Dan Graziano and Kevin Seifert reported in 2024.
Of course, the NFLPA took issue with that study, so it didn't help change the minds of players.
Considering this has been a debate for quite some time and nothing has changed no matter how many injuries players suffer, we wouldn't expect anything to change anytime soon.
