Kentucky RB Seth McGowan apologizes after touchdown celebration incident at South Carolina

Kentucky running back says he accidentally hit South Carolina QB’s grandfather with football

Kentucky running back Seth McGowan issued a public apology Saturday after an emotional touchdown celebration went wrong during the Wildcats’ 35-13 loss to South Carolina.

McGowan, who scored on a 20-yard run to give Kentucky an early 7-0 lead with 11:27 left in the first quarter, spiked the ball in celebration. Instead of hitting the ground, the ball connected with the grandfather of South Carolina starting quarterback LaNorris Sellers in the stands.

After the game, McGowan addressed the incident in his postgame press conference.

“That is completely my fault, and I am extending another apology,” McGowan said. “I would like to apologize to the fan that the ball connected with. I tried to throw it at the ground, and in a high-energy moment, it kind of slipped out, came out wrong. Absolutely unacceptable, and that is something that won’t happen again.”

The running back also took to social media, posting a message on Twitter to extend his apology further.

“If anyone can get me in contact with the fan or his family, I would like to formally apologize to them and make it up any way possible,” McGowan wrote. “Also I would like to apologize to the entire fans of South Carolina Football and their program.”

While McGowan’s score briefly gave Kentucky momentum, the Wildcats were unable to build on it, falling to 2-2 overall and 0-2 in SEC play.
