What went wrong against Atleti?
In the Real Deal podcast yesterday, they mentioned a clear issue: how Real Madrid players lost so many duels. In addition, Loconte mentioned how bad Courtois was distributing the ball, attempting long ball many times. In the tweet bellow, he detailed his analysis:
Kiyan Sobhani mentioned two main issues. First, Real Madrid couldn’t match Atleti’s intensity and players were suprised by it.
On second half, we had possession, but created nothing, the team was out of ideas.
Another interesting analysis was made by the channel Football Made Simple. With the ball, Tchouameni’s position was in the midfield, but without the ball the idea was to make a back line of 5, with Tchou in the middle of the CBs.
One issue was exactly the transition between the offensive to defensive phases. Often, the gap between CBs was huge. Also, when the team lost the ball higher, Tchou had the choose between counter-press or drop back to the back line. When he dropped, closing down the CB gap, there was a good amount space down in the middle…
We are all concerned about our mentality approaching big games, as basically the only top team we beat since last season was City. It’s many defeats and, as Kiyan pointed out, a win in the Derbi would be a good turning point ahead of other important, big games, like El Clasico and Liverpool.
It’s time to look ahead…
The squad has already arrived in Kazakhstan for the UCL game against Kairat. Carvajal and Trent were both out injured and Militao, despite not being injured, was not included in the squad list due to the knock he received in Atleti’s game. Therefore, Xabi needs to address two positions in the backline. We might see a backline of Asencio, Tchouameni, Dean and Carreras. Or will we see Valverde in the right back position again?
