McIlroy and Lowry lead Europe’s champagne-soaked Ryder Cup celebrations

Shane Lowry started Team Europe’s Ryder Cup celebrations as early as possible by sinking a cider greenside just minutes after sinking the putt needed to retain the trophy. Justin Rose’s caddie Mark Fulcher could be seen handing Lowry the drink as celebrations began in earnest.

Lowry was later pictured in pyjama-style gear with European colours, proudly lying with the Ryder Cup in front of Keegan Bradley’s infamous rallying-call that gained notoriety from Netflix’s Full Swing documentary.

Rory McIlroy took another approach: he was not seen in the midst of the hugging on the 18th green as he decided to walk down the 18th hole to support Robert MacIntyre, who managed to get a half against Sam Burns in the final match.

However, McIlroy set the tone once every European was back in the clubhouse by declaring in his broadcast interview that they would “celebrate like there is no tomorrow” after achieving something “many thought was not possible.”

Lowry, now draped in an Irish flag, rushed the trophy down to the European fans after the lift to celebrate with them, which led the broadcasters to crown him as the “man of the people”.

McIlroy was pictured doing the same at the barriers with his arms stretched out wide, his hat skew-whiff before he kept the chants of “ole, ole ole” going. Viktor Hovland got a kiss on the cheek by a man in a European bucket hat.

The party continued as the players linked up with their wives for the obligatory picture, which saw Hovland continue his role as the only singleton on the team by laying down in the middle of them all.

The players then appeared for their group press conference with beers in hand, McIlroy nursing a can of Stella Artois while Tyrrell Hatton sipped from a Peroni and Jon Rahm joined Lowry in drinking a Magners cider. As the media’s questions continued and drinks were finished, the players were passed fresh cans and bottles to remain lubricated.

McIlroy was asked about the torrent of abuse he received from the boisterous Bethpage masses and how satisfied he felt when he could give some abuse back.

”Very f------ satisfying,” he replied.

“Worth it” declared Europe’s official X account as McIlroy was drenched by champagne.

Rahm and Lowry both soaked in the celebrations – the latter, quite literally, as jubilant Europe supporters cheered long into the night.

The group hopped on a bus back from Bethpage with the Ryder Cup – and plenty more beers – on board, as the group serenaded McIlroy during a rendition of The Cranberries’ ‘Zombie’.

“We are the champions” Team Europe sang, as celebrations promised to go on until the early hours of the morning.
