Anthony Davis says he'll wear goggles for the rest of his career following offseason eye surgery

Anthony Davis will have a new look this season — and for the rest of his career. 

Davis told reporters at Dallas Mavericks media day Monday that he'll wear protective eyewear during games for the rest of his career. He'll do so under doctor's orders. 

Davis suffered an injury to his right eye during an April 2 game in which teammate Daniel Gafford inadvertently elbowed him in his eye. Davis returned the the game after having stitches on a cut above his eye. But the injury required offseason surgery to repair a detached retina.

Davis' right eye was noticeably red as he spoke with reporters Monday. 

Davis told reporters that the redness was due to eye drops that he's still using post-surgery. He said that his vision is clear and that he'll have no limitations during training camp — other than playing with goggles, that is. 

Kyrie Irving gives update on ACL

Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving, meanwhile, provided a status update on the torn ACL that he suffered on March 3. He told reporters that "I'm right on schedule" in his recovery. Head coach Jason Kidd added that Irving is doing "quite well," but cautioned against speeding up Irving's timeline to return, per ESPN's Tim MacMahon.

Irving remains without a specific timeline to return. 

The Mavericks are counting on their oft-injured stars to return healthy this season. The hope is that Davis and Irving can maintain their health and compete for a championship alongside much-hyped rookie Cooper Flagg. 

The stakes are high in Dallas in the first full season post-Luka Dončić trade.
