As Mahomes, 30, and the Chiefs were exiting the field at MetLife Stadium after their win over the New York Giants on Sunday, Sept. 21, the quarterback appeared to hand his game-worn headband to a young fan wearing Chiefs merch.
In the viral video shared on social media, Nina Miller, wearing Giants gear, is seen swiping the headband from the boy.

Internet sleuths then found Miller on social media and circulated a now-deleted video of her bragging about getting the headband from Mahomes.
On Saturday, Sept. 27, Miller took to TikTok to defend herself amid the backlash, claiming everyone "is having heart failure over this."
Miller claimed that fans from all rows were swarming the front row of the stands in an attempt to get close to Mahomes, emphasizing that she "paid for" her tickets but "didn't know" if the boy she took the headband from was "from the nosebleeds."
Users quickly called Miller out in the comments, with one writing, "You literally snatched it out of the kid’s hand. You really think Patrick would give his head band [sic] to a grown a-- giants fan over a kid? Let’s be realistic."
On Sept. 28, Miller posted a second video on TikTok addressing the incident.
"I just want to talk to you guys for one minute from my heart," Miller said to the camera. "At the game, with all the noise and all the excitement, I honestly thought that Pat Mahomes was giving me the headband. I reached for it without thinking."
Miller said she found out later that the headband "was meant for that little boy for his 10 year-old birthday," and claimed she "felt horrible" because of it.
"I don't want to ruin anyone's little time at the game," she said.
Miller did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

Apologizing directly to the boy, Miller said, "I'm sorry that I ruined your moment. You should have had your moment for your birthday," before asking the internet to help put her in touch with the boy's family so she could mail him the souvenir.
Miller's apology wasn't entirely well-received by fans, however. The comment with the most likes on her post reads, “'I’m sorry I got caught'" while another that says, "She felt horrible cause she’s getting dragged all over social media," was liked more than four thousand times.
