Everton had to settle for a point after another missed opportunity, drawing 1-1 with a struggling West Ham side at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Jarrod Bowen became the first opposition player to score at the new ground and he cancelled out Michael Keane’s brilliant first-half header.
Despite the single point picked up here, the Toffees are probably going to feel disappointed after failing to capitalise on another unsettled opponent following similar missed opportunities against Aston Villa and Wolves recently.
The Blues haven’t picked up all three points in a month but still maintain their place in the top half of the league table after the draw against Nuno Espirito Santo's side.
Both Jack Grealish and Iliman Ndiaye were kept rather quiet tonight by the Hammers and the lack of threat from the hosts' number nine became evident once again. Both Beto and Thierno Barry often stick out like a sore thumb and bring little to the table offensively once the Blues’ wingers are sufficiently dealt with.
Here are the player ratings from Everton’s 1-1 draw with West Ham:
Jordan Pickford: 7
The scoreline could’ve been worse had it not been for Jordan Pickford being decisive during a couple of moments. He saved Jake O’Brien’s blushes after the defender miscued his header back to the goalkeeper, which was intercepted by Cryscencio Summerville just inches away from Pickford.
He also came rushing out of his line to clear the ball from Summerville’s feet inside the box on another occasion. Had little to do with the Jarrod Bowen goal, given that it took a massive deflection of Michael Keane before going in.
Jake O’Brien: 4
One of the poorest players on the pitch for Everton, O’Brien had very little going for him in this game. He gave the ball away just a few feet away from Pickford’s goal and was saved by his goalkeeper.
O’Brien also had a torrid time keeping track of Summerville and Malick Diouf on his flank and lost his man on a number of occasions. West Ham’s goal came from a buildup through his flank.
However, O’Brien did make a couple of vital interceptions towards the end of the game.
James Tarkowski: 6
Could’ve gotten an assist after delivering a fantastic cross to Beto from the half-space in the first half of the game. Tarkowski, however, was completely outpaced by Diouf, which led to Bowen’s goal and failed to prevent the cross into the box. Had a rash moment that saw him testing the referee's patience after going into the book, but was otherwise solid defensively.
Michael Keane: 8
Michael Keane had a brilliant game tonight. It was his powerful dipping header that put Everton in front in the first half. Keane also headed away the cross from Diouf, which unfortunately fell to Bowen and despite getting his body in the way, he couldn’t deflect the shot away from Pickford’s goal. Led the backline well and prevented the visitors from creating too many chances.
Vitalii Mykolenko: 6
It was a pretty solid display from Mykolenko, although he could’ve probably done better to prevent Bowen from taking the shot that led to the West Ham equaliser. Mykolenko also got forward on a few occasions in this game and played a lovely ball in the first half.
James Garner: 8
Garner delivered the delicious cross in the first half that led to Keane’s goal. He was everywhere once again and it is his industry combined with Idrissa Gueye’s niftiness that led to the hosts’ best phases of the game.
He also produced a good save off Areola late in the game as his ball-striking continues to be a constant threat for Everton.
Idrissa Gueye: 6
Played an awful pass back to Tarkowski which led to the central defender’s booking in the first half. Gueye was otherwise pretty accurate with his passes and also recovered the ball on a few occasions but failed to kick on in the second half.
Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall: 7
It was a positive showing from Dewsbury-Hall, who was involved in some of the Blues’ best attempts, especially in the second half. He was unfortunate to go into the referee’s book despite a clean tackle late in the game and will now miss the match against Crystal Palace.
Iliman Ndiaye: 5 (replaced by Tyler Dibling at 81’)
It was a poor game from Iliman Ndiaye who looked boxed in tonight and failed to create danger from the right flank. He was kept quiet by the opposition defenders.
Moyes should’ve made the Dibling change a lot earlier just to shake things up on the flank.
Beto: 4 (replaced by Thierno Barry at 69’)
Beto could’ve done a lot better with the excellent Tarkowski cross in the first half that led to Everton’s first shot on target. The Everton number nine failed to get enough power behind his header.
He had another anonymous night in front of goal and it’s concerning how much of a headache the striker slot is becoming. Neither Beto nor Barry seem up to the mark.
Jack Grealish: 6
Grealish had a quiet game by his usual standards. Although his talent shone through on a couple of occasions, meaningful forays into the opposition box were few and far between.
Probably didn’t help that Kyle Walker-Peters and Soungoutou Magassa were very physical in dealing with him, especially early on in the game, forcing Grealish to drop deeper and deeper.
Substitutions
Thierno Barry: 5
Much like the man he replaced, Barry also had little impact on the game. He didn’t get a lot of service either.
Tyler Dibling: 6
Came on for the last 10 minutes and made a couple of intelligent moves with the ball, cutting in from the right flank.
