LAS CRUCES, New Mexico (KTSM) — After a short week of preparation, New Mexico State football returns to action Thursday night for its first Conference USA weekday game of the 2025 season.
The Sam Houston vs. New Mexico State game will be the first CUSA midweek game of the year and the only NCAA DI FBS college football game going on in the country on Thursday night.
The Aggies (2-2, 0-1 CUSA) are looking to bounce back after back-to-back losses, including a 38-20 defeat to in-state rival New Mexico last Saturday in Albuquerque. Now, they’ll return home for a matchup against winless Sam Houston (0-4, 0-1 CUSA) at Aggie Memorial Stadium.
It’s a quick turnaround for NMSU, which will be playing just five days after its last game. Sam Houston, meanwhile, is coming off a bye week and will have had 12 days to prepare for its game against the Aggies.
Despite the challenge, head coach Tony Sanchez says the Aggies are embracing the midweek spotlight.
“When we sat down in Destin with all the other coaches and we go over with the Conference USA officials, they talk about the viewership we get for these games. It’s pretty impressive — the number of TVs that’ll be turned on. I mean, you’re sitting there and you’re getting close to a million households watching, and that’s a pretty big deal for our conference. So, I think for these guys [NM State players], it’s great. National TV. Be on the spotlight.” NM State football head coach Tony Sanchez said.
INJURY UPDATE
NM State football head coach Tony Sanchez provided an update on the health of some key players on Monday.
Sanchez said Monday that linebacker Tyler Martinez, center Kai Wheeler, and running back Dijon Stanley have all been ruled out for the Sam Houston game. Martinez is dealing with a lower body injury, while both Wheeler and Stanley are dealing with head injuries.
The good news? Wide receiver TK King has been fully cleared to play and is expected to make his season debut. King has missed the first four games with a hamstring injury.
