Let’s take a quick look in the body bag to identify the mangled corpse. (Someone has to do it!)

Virginia Tech didn’t actually stuff a ton of NC State’s rushing attempts, but only 12 of State’s 27 runs went for four yards or more, and the team finished with a meagre nine highlight yards (VT had 137), so the Hokies did surprisingly well containing Hollywood Smothers near the line of scrimmage. We’ve come to expect him to create some big plays on his own by breaking tackles, but sometimes the other team is no help here.

NC State was still pretty good on dropbacks despite the non-existent run game but the Hokies managed to keep State in front of them for the most part, and big plays were hard to come by. NC State’s success rate on pass plays was 45%, a good bit below its season average of 49%.

In addition to getting crushed on the ground, NC State’s defense produced very few havoc plays, and for the second straight week it failed to force a turnover. The Pack has just three takeaways on the season and played three games with none. Obviously, this is unhelpful. There was just a complete lack of potential game-changing plays against Virginia Tech, on both sides of the ball, and it probably wouldn’t have taken much to turn this game into a win, but so it goes.
