Borussia Mönchengladbach is in a spot of turmoil. Sat bottom of the table, they are coping with managing director Roland Virkus' sudden resignation and the absence of a true coach.

Lothar Matthäus, a former Gladbach star in his playing days, has called for consistent decisions and placed praise on the outgoing managing director.

"Gladbach needs to make a decision now, and quickly, but above all, the decision must be a good one. Roland Virkus's resignation is very consistent. He assessed the situation correctly.

“It shows that he has a Gladbach heart. He can't solve the current problems and send the right signals that Gladbach needs, this is the right decision for him,” Matthäus added.

As for the head coach position, Gerardo Seoane vacated the role for Eugen Polanski. However, Matthäus feels an assessment on the interim manager cannot be made just yet.

"It's far too early to evaluate Eugen Polanski's work. I think he'll still be in charge of the next game, and then we have the international break, which we should obviously make use of.

"Roger Schmidt immediately comes to mind, if we can afford that coach. Borussia also needs to consider what it wants to stand for on the field.

“What kind of football do they want to play? What style do they have the right players for, and who should bear sporting responsibility on and off the pitch,” the 64-year-old concluded.
