Fever's remarkable 2025 season ends on a spirited Game 5 overtime loss vs. Aces

After extending the best-of-five WNBA semifinal series to decisive Game 5, the Indiana Fever's season ended in a 107-98 OT loss to the Las Vegas Aces.

After No. 6 seed Indiana extended the best-of-five WNBA semifinals series against No. 2 seed Las Vegas to a decisive Game 5 from Michelob ULTRA Arena on Tuesday night, the Fever's remarkable 2025 season came to a close through a spirited 107-98 overtime loss to the Aces.

Despite losing Kelsey Mitchell to a worrisome left leg injury that required her to be helped to the locker room late in the fourth quarter, point guard Odyssey Sims led the team with 27 points on 7-for-14 shooting, 1-for-2 from 3-point territory, and 12-for-13 on free throws. Natasha Howard followed Sims with 16 points, and Mitchell finished with 15.

Although Aliyah Boston fouled out with 27 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter on a highly questionable foul call that was eventually withheld after Stephanie White's challenge, the third-year cornerstone forward's 11 points and 16 rebounds allowed her to record a fourth consecutive and the sixth career playoff double-double in her tenth playoff game

As for Las Vegas, A'ja Wilson was virtually unstoppable, primarily due to Boston's foul trouble, which allowed her to face much more favorable defensive matchups. On the night, she led the Aces in scoring with 35 points on 13-for-27 shooting, 1-for-1 from beyond the arc, and 8-for-10 from the charity stripe, to go along with eight rebounds, five assists, four steals, and four blocks. Following Wilson on the scoresheet was Jackie Young, who posted a double-double with 32 points and 10 assists.

Although losing Mitchell appeared to be what could have been the proverbial "nail in the coffin" for the Fever, the team rallied like they have all season to force a five-minute overtime period. Even as Indiana fell short during the extended period, the team showcased its unwavering perseverance by continuing to fight back, regardless of the circumstances.

As the team enters the offseason, the future remains bright, as the Fever not only came within eight points of a trip to the WNBA Finals, the team also developed a strong culture within the locker room, despite having suffered five season-ending injuries, which included the star power of Caitlin Clark, Sophie Cunningham, Aari McDonald, Sydney Colson, and Chloe Bibby.

Regarding the Hawkeye representation, Megan Gustafson will advance to the WNBA Finals as a member of the Aces, where she will face the Phoenix Mercury in a best-of-seven series that begins on Friday, October [date]3. Gustafson scored five points on 2-for-2 from the floor and 1-for-1 from the line during her 18 minutes of action in Game 5.
