WVU hoops gears up for the Ross Hodge era, WVU golf keeps piling up trophies, and Tino Sunseri gets sacked again. Good morning — this is the Shotgun/Throwdown, your daily WVU sports roundup
Welcome to The Shotgun/Throwdown, your daily West Virginia sports roundup (that we didn’t already talk about in another article) with some sophomoric humor and daily distractions thrown in for good measure. And if there’s something we missed, be sure to talk about it in the comments.
HOPE (COLISEUM)
West Virginia basketball is stepping into the Ross Hodge era with a new look inside and out. Hope Coliseum will soon glow blue and gold at night, the most visible sign of a fresh start for a program that’s undergone a near-total roster overhaul. Hodge has 14 newcomers on his first roster, with only Abraham Oyeadier back after redshirting last season.
That group includes Chattanooga transfer Honor Huff, who led the nation in made threes last year, and Treysen Eaglestaff, who poured in nearly 19 a game at North Dakota. Inside, 7-footer Harlan Obioha has slimmed down 30 pounds since arriving from UNC Wilmington and looks poised for a bigger role than expected. Hodge also brought along two players he knows well from North Texas, Brenen Lorient and Jasper Floyd, to help anchor the transition.
Hodge isn’t calling this a rebuild. He’s already said the goal is to compete for the Big 12 and beyond. Whether that’s realistic or not will get answered soon enough.
MOUNTAINEER ROUNDUP
- WVU golf ran away with the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational, finishing 36-under and 18 shots clear of the field. Kaleb Wilson repeated as champ, this time sharing medalist honors, while Nick Turowski and Ryan Leach both cracked the top five. It’s the Mountaineers’ second team title in three events this fall.
- WVU volleyball opens Big 12 play at home tonight against Kansas State, with first serve set for 6 p.m. at the Hope Coliseum. The Mountaineers are 12–1 but looking to bounce back after a four-set loss to Cincinnati, and fans can snag rally towels if they’re among the first 250 through the door.
AROUND THE LEAGUE (AND BEYOND)
- The Big 12 fined Colorado $50,000 after chants of “F— the Mormons” broke out from Buffaloes fans during Saturday’s game against BYU. Commissioner Brett Yormark issued a public reprimand, and both CU’s administration and Deion Sanders apologized. BYU also released a statement denouncing religious discrimination.
- Former Pitt QB Tino Sunseri is out as UCLA’s offensive coordinator after just four games. Mountaineer fans will remember him from the 2011 Backyard Brawl, when WVU sacked him 10 times in a 21-20 win.
- A federal judge cleared the way for the Pac-12’s $55 million lawsuit against the Mountain West to move forward, denying the MWC’s motion to dismiss. The case centers on “poaching fees” tied to last year’s scheduling agreement, with Colorado State, Utah State, San Diego State, Fresno State, and Boise State all set to jump from the Mountain West to the Pac-12 in 2026.
