LaFleur’s Packers have been nothing if not inconsistent this season.
I don’t know if Matt LaFleur is or should be on the hot seat, but he’s facing a bit more heat at this point of the season than I think just about anyone could have anticipated.
His game management has been called into question (by me, among others, in the interest of full disclosure), as has his roster management, and his Packers are just 2-1-1 after stumbling in two very winnable games the last two weeks.
And fair or not, this is the kind of criticism you get when 1) you’re the head coach of a self-proclaimed (in action if not in word) contender and 2) your team can’t get out of its own way to save its life.
Because that’s what these last two games really seem to have come down to: the Packers simply haven’t gotten out of their own way. Offensive line injuries aside, they still should have beaten the Browns, and would have if not for a brain-cramp interception by Jordan Love and a blocked field goal by the Browns. The same is true of their tie with the Cowboys, where they should have won if not for a defensive collapse and a poorly managed final Packers drive.
Again, there’s no indication LaFleur is facing any kind of job pressure, and it’s too early to say he should be. But this is a team that’s built to contend right now, and if they can’t, LaFleur is going to keep getting the wrong kind of attention.

LaFleur “never considered” going for it on 4th down with just two yards to go on the Dallas 49-yard line early in the game, a strange call considering how well the Packers had moved the ball to that point.
