Power rankings: Where the Jets rank in national polls heading into Week 5

The New York Jets are still winless heading into Week 5 and power rankings polls from national media outlets reflect that.

While the Jets (0-4) gave the Miami Dolphins a push late, New York still lost 27-21. Truthfully, that one-score game did not even feel that close.

Here’s how the Jets fare in national media power rankings polls heading into Week 5:

30. New York Jets (27): No cigars here, but three of their four losses are by one score. But bad teams find ways to lose, and the NYJ didn't have to look hard Monday with three turnovers and 13 penalties.

Week 4 Result: Lost vs. Miami 27-21

The arrival of head coach Aaron Glenn was supposed to change the culture in New York.

Four games into his first season, the "new" New York Jets look a lot like the old ones.

Any offensive momentum the team built in a shootout loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 1 is gone. What isn't is the sloppy play that has seemingly dogged this team for years. A promising first drive Monday was ended by one of New York's three turnovers. The Jets committed 13 penalties for over 100 yards.

Some teams can overcome a miscue here and there, but no team is winning many games when it loses the turnover battle and continually shoots itself in the foot.

Rookie spotlight: Mason Taylor

The only real bright spot Monday night for the Jets was Taylor, the second-round tight end. He had only six catches for 43 yards through the first three weeks but caught five balls for 63 yards against the Dolphins. Those are the same numbers Garrett Wilson had, and the Jets have to be hoping Taylor can become a complement to Wilson to give this offense a fighting chance. First-round tackle Armand Membou has started all four games and is having a typically up-and-down rookie year.

Aaron Glenn watched his offense fumble the ball away twice deep in Miami territory, and his defense allowed a 96-yard touchdown drive in the first half, adding in a slew of penalties for good measure. The Jets at least cut into the Fins' 10-0 lead before halftime with Nick Folk's 58-yard field goal, but they then promptly coughed up the opening kickoff of the third quarter. The self-inflicted errors were absurd, and yet the Jets were still very much in the game. They had a chance at a late Dolphins fumble but couldn’t fall on it. Justin Fields tried his best to drag this group back but couldn't quite do it. The Jets have see-sawed back and forth with their efforts, but the bottom line is, they’re still winless. Glenn can't be happy.

This team is sloppy, doesn't tackle well, has tons of penalties and turns the ball over. Not a great start for head coach Aaron Glenn.

The Jets are one of three remaining 0-4 teams in the NFL after their Monday night loss to the Dolphins. It took a while to get rolling, but the Jets played hard until the final few minutes before falling 27-21. Still, the only thing that matters is that the team is 0-4. Another great Garrett Wilson season looks to be lost to the archives. His 77.9 overall PFF grade is seventh among wide receivers.

Biggest issue on offense: Third-down conversions

Before Monday night's game, the Jets were tied with the Titans for the worst third-down conversion rate in the league -- 27.8%. It got a little better Monday, as they were successful on 4 of 9 third-down opportunities. Third-and-long (7 yards or more) feels like a mile to the Jets, who entered the game 1-of-16 before going 3-of-5 on Monday. But in general, they're simply not built to play that type of game. Quarterback Justin Fields' inconsistency as a passer, coupled with a lack of playmakers on the perimeter, really restricts the offense. Wide receiver Garrett Wilson is still the Jets' only true difference-maker on the outside.
