Woltemade and two Gordon penalties help Newcastle get first CL win

Nick Woltemade scored his first Champions League goal and Anthony Gordon converted two penalties as Newcastle United won 4-0 at Belgian debutants Union Saint-Gilloise on Wednesday. The Magpies took the lead in the 17th minute when a volley from Sandro Tonali took a decisive flick off team-mate Woltemade's heel which beat goalkeeper Kjell Scherpen who was diving the other way.

It was the third Newcastle goal overall for the Germany striker, who had arrived in summer for an estimated €80 million ($93 million) from VfB Stuttgart, and a first in the elite event in his maiden start.

Gordon converted a 43rd-minute penalty into the bottom left corner for 2-0 after Anthony Elanga was brought down by Fedde Leysen.

Fedde then handled the ball in a duel with Woltemade, and Gordon made no mistake from the spot again when he chose the same corner in the 64th. Harvey Barnes came on in the 73rd and wrapped up matters eight minutes later on the counter.

The Magpies got their first points after an opening 2-1 home defeat against Barcelona, while Saint-Gilloise could not repeat their 3-1 victory at PSV Eindhoven on matchday one.

In the other early kick-off, Azerbaijan's Qarabag followed up on their opening 3-2 at Benfica with a 2-0 home win over Copenhagen to join former champions Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Inter Milan on a maximum six points.

Captain Abdellah Zoubir slotted home in the 28th on the rebound of Pedro Bicalho's shot against the left post. Emmanuel Addai wrapped up matters with a low drive in the 83rd, seconds after Qarabag were saved by the crossbar at the other end on Gabriel Pereira's header.

The seven late games include Barca v defending champions Paris Saint-Germain, Monaco v Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund v Athletic Bilbao.
