Team GB tops USA at Royal St. George's to take Simpson Cup

The team from Great Britain had a big day at Royal St. George's Golf Club, using a strong day in singles to capture the Cup, 12-7.

Much like the team from the other side of the pond scored a big victory at the Ryder Cup last weekend, the same could be said for this year's Simpson Cup, which wrapped up on Wednesday.

The team from Great Britain had a big day at Royal St. George's Golf Club, using a strong showing in singles to capture the Cup, 12-7. The victory broke a 6-6 tie in the overall competition heading into this year's event.

What is the Simpson Cup?

In 2012 at TPC Sawgrass, injured veterans from the United States and British military forces came together for a few action-packed days, battling it out in a Ryder Cup-style event — the Simpson Cup was born. Despite the difference in skill level among players, the handicap system allows any veteran, regardless of talent, to represent their country.

The tournament is named after John Simpson, former Senior Vice President of International Management Group. Simpson only has one fully functional leg due to a battle with polio as a child. Throughout his career at IMG, Simpson managed some of the biggest names in golf, including Nick Faldo, Bernhard Langer, Vijay Singh and Greg Norman.

Just like the Ryder Cup, the Simpson Cup alternates between venues in the U.S. and Britain. In 2013, after its inaugural playing in Ponte Verde, Florida, the veterans traveled to Royal Lytham & St. Annes, an 11-time Open Championship course, in the United Kingdom. Throughout the Cup's history, some of the most historic venues in golf have played host to the deserving field.

What happened on Wednesday?

Mike Browne, who has played in 10 Simpson Cups, holed the winning putt, closing out his match 1 up against Jerome Taylor for the victory.

Captain Andy Stevens said the strategy they had was well-executed.

"I am beyond proud of the lads. It feels so good to win this trophy," Stevens said. "We discussed the importance of starting well last night, and the boys upfront did exactly what was asked of them. Once we got that momentum, we knew we had to drive home the advantage, because the Americans were always going to keep fighting. But we've got over the line, and I dare say there will be some big celebrations this evening

Paul Copley, Matt Arnold, Kushal Limbu, Dave Carroll, Neil Flynn and Steve Dickinson all rolled for the home side while Justin Lynn, Brian Donarski, Chad Pfeifer and Charles Young Jr. got victories for the Americans.

Next year, the event heads to Shady Oaks CC in Texas.
