High school boys golf: Waterford clings to 2-shot lead after tight Day 1 of 2A state tournament

The final round of the 2A boys golf state tournament on Thursday has the potential to be pretty dramatic.

The top four teams after Wednesday’s opening round at Palisades Golf Course are only separated by six strokes, with Waterford clinging to the narrow lead after shooting a 320.

Beaver is right behind with a 322, followed by American Heritage with a 324 and defending state champion South Sevier with a 326.

A year ago South Sevier had a 24-stroke lead after Day 1 as it ran away with its first state championship in school history with a two-day total of 638.

The race for 2A medalist figures to be equally as tight.

North Summit’s Bradley Woolstenhulme and Kanab’s Ray Capson both shot 2-under 74 as they lead Millard’s Derek Memmott by one stroke. Three other golfers are just two shots behind after shooting a 76 — Waterford’s Will Stender, American Heritage’s Carson Vonk and Beaver’s Taven Young.
