Sports England say the PlayZone will be a significant improvement to the existing playing field.
An all-weather sports pitch is set to be built after plans were approved by councillors.
It will see a playing field at Grangetown Youth and Community Centre on Grange Farm Road, transformed into a multi-use games area, with synthetic turf, fencing and floodlighting.
Funding will mostly come from the Football Foundation as part of its PlayZone Programme, which aims to create safe, inclusive and accessible outdoor facilities for activity through football and other sports.
In recent months, Redcar and Cleveland Borough Council has granted planning permission for others in Saltburn and Marske, with several locations also in line for the facilities.
They are typically hosted in disadvantaged communities where leisure facilities are at a premium, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service.
Other aspects of the scheme include colour-coded goals and benches for spectators.
Sports England said they would be a "qualitative improvement" on the existing hard-standing sports provision at the site.
A council officer's report said: "The application would improve the recreation facilities in the area and the community would gain a benefit from the proposal by having an all-weather pitch which caters for a range of sports."
It also said there would be no adverse impact on neighbouring properties given the separation distances to any nearby homes and the existing use of the site.
Proposed floodlighting, which was subject to a lighting assessment, "will be angled as such to avoid any light spillage or impact on the closest residential properties".
A report, approved by the Labour-led council last year, described how each PlayZone could cost up to £275,000, with the Football Foundation footing 75% of the costs for their design and construction.
It said the remaining 25% had been agreed in principle to be met by the council.
Once constructed, PlayZones are leased to a tenant, who will be responsible for overseeing their management and maintenance.
