New York Jets vs. Dallas Cowboys: 5 things to watch for in Week 5

Keep an eye on these things on the field in Week 5 between the Jets and Cowboys.

The New York Jets' grind through the 2025 NFL season rolls on in Week 5.

This time, the Jets (0-4) will welcome the Dallas Cowboys (1-2-1) game at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.

All week, topics and storylines have been discussed ahead of this battle between these cross-conference foes. In the end, regardless of what is said by players, coaches, media outlets and fans, it always comes down to what unfolds on the field in the NFL.

And once the battle arrives, there will be a few particular things to keep in mind to look out for.

With that, here are five things to watch for during the Jets (0-3) against the Cowboys in Week 5:

Out of the gate

Two weeks ago, head coach Aaron Glenn said his team needs to start games faster. Instead, the Jets went on to lose a one-score game to the Miami Dolphins in Week 4 which began with a fumble at the goal line by his offense.

That was nearly a fast start after the Green and White held Miami do to a field goal on their opening drive... but it was not in the end. Can that change against the Cowboys?

Defending Dak

The Cowboys have long been a passing team on offense with quarterback Dak Prescott under center. He might not have CeeDee Lamb at receiver (ankle), but Dallas still has George Pickens on the outside.

The Jets' secondary and overall defense has struggled against the pass this year. If tackling doesn't improve as well? Pressuring is going to be at an all-time high for the secondary.

Fields' opportunity?

While the Jets have concerns in their defensive backfield, no one does more than the Cowboys. Dallas is in dead last in the NFL, allowing 297.3 yards per game in the air.

If New York's offense cannot get going in the passing game against this Cowboys secondary? Justin Fields might not be the answer.

Brownlee's role

Continuing the secondary trend is Jarvis Brownlee. Acquired via trade two weeks ago in a deal with the Tennessee Titans, Brownlee did not play because of an ankle injury in Week 4. It appears the cornerback going to make his debut against the Cowboys. Glenn has hinted at Brownlee playing both inside and outside. We shall see.

Run game threat?

New York Jets running back Breece Hall (20) dives for another few yards, Sunday, September 14, 2025, in East Rutherford.

It's likely that the Jets will be without Braelon Allen (knee) for an extended period. That leaves Breece Hall alone with Isaiah Davis behind him in the running back room. Can New York still grind out yards on the ground without Allen? Hall has already been receiving No. 1 rusher snaps.
