What’s left of the 49ers will take
The San Francisco 49ers and Los Angeles Rams are both 3-1, but it’s easy to tell which team is in a more tenuous spot. San Francisco won’t have Brock Purdy, Ricky Pearsall, or Jauan Jennings for Thursday night’s game, as Kyle Shanahan bizarrely chose to start Purdy against the Jacksonville Jaguars. Purdy’s bothersome toe acted up again and now he’s out for the far more important matchup, with Mac Jones back in the saddle. When has a Shanahan ever jeopardized the health of his QB with a bad decision?
Anyway…
The Rams escaped with a win over the Indianapolis Colts, whose self-destruction included Adonai Mitchell wiping out a game-winning touchdown on a holding penalty, dropping the ball before the goal line on a would-be touchdown, and the Colts defense only having 10 players for the winning Rams TD to Tutu Atwell. They are, nevertheless, a lot healthier than the 49ers and are heavy favorites as a result.
Ideally, both teams lose, but since that’s not possible, in the short-term it might be better for the 49ers to lose for as long as they’re close to the Seattle Seahawks in the standings and hold a head-to-head tiebreaker. We can deal with the Rams during the back-half of the season. If the 49ers win then it’s fine, because the Rams figure to be the bigger threat in the division.
