Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim has defended his tactical system in the face of mounting external pressure, responding directly to criticism from club legend Wayne Rooney. The Portuguese coach, who oversaw a disappointing 15th-place finish last season, has seen his side lose three of their opening six Premier League matches this campaign, leaving United languishing in 14th.

Rooney, speaking earlier this week, admitted he had “lost faith” in Amorim’s approach, arguing that the manager’s philosophy was stifling the squad. But Amorim, addressing reporters ahead of United’s next fixture, insisted results cannot simply be reduced to formations.

It is normal,” Amorim said when asked about Rooney’s remarks, as reported by Sky Sports. “You cannot run away from the results, and then we have the baggage from last season. But last season for me doesn’t matter. We’ve had six games this season, and we’ve lost three. We have to look at the games we lost. Did we lose the game against Arsenal because of the system? I don’t think so.”

The United boss went further, highlighting individual errors rather than tactical structure as decisive in defeats. “When you look at City, was the first thing you thought about the system? No. And Brentford, the goals we conceded and the chances we created had nothing to do with the system.

While pressure intensifies from fans and pundits, Amorim remains defiant, adamant that United’s struggles are not rooted in formation but in execution. Amorim’s side will next face Sunderland at Old Trafford.
